Weekend

Director's
Circle Weekend last spring |
"Philadelphia was
stupendous! As a new member of the Director's Circle, I can't
wait to see what happens next, as now I'm hooked," wrote
one of the generous supporters of the museum who, with the museum's
staff, participated in the annual art-filled weekend last spring.
Thirty-five enthusiastic participants convened at the Philadelphia
Museum of Art for Degas and the Dance. A talk by Joseph Rishel,
senior curator, and the 140 featured paintings and drawings gave
fascinating insight into the world of dance that was central to
Paris culture in Degas's day. Certainly, the experience made for
lively conversations over cocktails and dinner.
Saturday's focus tours of Winterthur, Francis du Pont's former
home, revealed magnificent collections of antique furniture, paintings,
silver, and more. The breathtaking gardens, in full spring splendor,
the galleries, and of course the gift shop made it a morning to
remember. Next stop: Andalusia on the Delaware River to view the
19th-century Greek Revival Biddle estate with its American and
European furnishings and spectacular gardens. Later, a private
peek into portrait artist Nelson Shanks's studio and collection
of Renaissance and Baroque art and furniture was a treat.
Sunday featured Wyck House, shown by its executive director John
M. Groff. Home to nine generations of one family, it personifies
Philadelphia's history and underscores the city's leadership in
our nation's development. Concluding the weekend, Marigene Harrington
Butler (class of 1953) graciously opened her doors to the group
for a sumptuous brunch.
