- Fall 1999
From the Director
This
fall the museum is bustling with activities planned in conjunction
with the special exhibition, The Moon and the Stars: Afterlife
of a Roman Empress. Faculty and staff from across the campus,
as well as artists and specialists from across the country, represent-ing
a variety of disciplines, are helping the museum offer a range
of programs related to the theme of the semester, "Representing
Women & Power." More than 3,000 visitors will enjoy these
programs, ranging from gallery talks and lectures to artist demonstrations.
Equally important to the museum's efforts to serve its diverse
constituencies is the work of a corps of volunteer docents who
will provide dozens of introductory tours of The Moon and the
Stars as well as the museum's permanent collection galleries.
In order to continue
offering gallery tours and other vital educational initiatives,
the museum needs additional volunteers. We especially need docents
to work with one of our most popular school programs. Focusing
on a selection of objects in the museum's ancient collection,
the program aims to help students understand how a Greek drinking
vessel or an Egyptian funerary object can advance our understanding
of cultures that existed many hundreds of years ago. But the museum
also needs volunteers to help with tours for all age groups.
The museum's education
coordinator, Amy Dane, stresses that no particular expertise or
background is necessary to participate in the program. Docents
receive training for each major temporary exhibition, and experienced
docents assist newcomers to learn about works in the permanent
collection. Training also addresses teaching techniques in the
gallery situation.
Not everyone is interested
in gallery teaching—the museum has a menu of other opportunities
for involvement in our behind-the-scenes activities. We would
welcome help with scheduling tours and other programs, researching
funding sources, assisting with public relations or a variety
of other outreach efforts. If you have some spare time, we would
love to hear from you.
Finally, I would like
to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to Amy
Dane for her energetic leadership and to the docents for their
enthusiasm and dedication, Over the past three years, Amy and
the docents have worked to expand and enhance the museum's outreach
efforts, performing a vital function for the museum and the communities
we serve. Last year, the museum received many more requests for
tour than we were able to accommodate, a strong indication of
the excellence of the program offered. Congratulations and thank
you!
