Rooke Theatre
| The Alice Withington Rooke Theatre is an airy,
modern brick building. The mainstage theatre is an intimate
192-seat facility, with excellent accoustics, sight lines, and
state-of-the-art technical systems (lighting, sound, scenic
machinery). The backstage shop is well equipped for wood and
steel construction. The basement Black Box is a flexible space
adaptable to experimental productions, with varied seating (capacity
about 50). The building's lobby, a comfortably carpeted area
opening through window walls to a patio, can be used for receptions
and parties. |

| The rest of the building is given over to a design
studio, a classroom, a recently refurbished green room/common
room, a costume shop, and departmental offices. The entire building
is handicap accessible.
Originally called the Laboratory Theater, Rooke Theatre was
renamed in 1977 to honor the mother of trustee Dorothy Rooke
McCullough, member of the class of 1950. Rooke is built on
the site of the former Playshop and Laboratory Theater, a
small laboratory theater that Mount Holyoke students had used
since 1929.
