Project Description
Summer 06
Cross Country Trails
Repairs and improvements will be made to many of the colleges walking and equestrian trails to prepare for an intercollegiate cross country race in the autumn. This work will be disruptive to users of the trails.
Summer 06
Kendall Hall
Work here will alter an existing “visitor’s team” room converting it to a toilet and changing area. There will be demolition, re-construction, electrical and mechanical work. The disruption should be confined to the work area. This work will be closely coordinated with the managers at Kendall.
Summer 06

Williston Library
Main Reading Room’s 18 year old carpet will be replaced (as well as some adjacent rooms) and the ceiling will be repainted. Our staff will also upgrade the lighting in this space as well by replacing all the fixture ballasts and wiring to improve both efficiency and reliability. This work will require relocation of shelving and books. Project to begin June 5th – mid July. This space will not be available to the campus during this time.

Study Rooms at the South Stacks of Williston Library:
Work here will convert the existing space to collaborative study space primarily using glass partitions. Most of the disruption for this project will be in the immediate work vicinity. Power hand tools such as drills, saws, etc. will be utilized during this project. Dust should be minimal.

Summer 06
Wilder Hall
As you know, on Feb.17th during heavy wind gusts a large branch (weighing several tons) broke away from a century old Copper Beach tree striking the northwest corner of Wilder Hall. This incident caused considerable damage to the exterior masonry walls, slate roof, chimney and timber structure; it also collapsed the roof above the northern entry porch. Short term repairs were made immediately following the accident. Because it is so important to match the colors of the newly repaired and existing masonry, the College has decided to clean and re-point the entire building exterior now (similar to Safford, Blanchard and Pratt). These longer term restoration efforts will continue through the summer making the area around Wilder another busy work zone until later in August.
Summer 06
Gamble Auditorium
ADA Access to Gamble will be greatly enhanced by the additionof compliant work stations at both the rear and front of the auditorium along with the installation of a chair lift at the front.
Pending
Crosswalks on Rte 116 (5 locations)
Summer 06
5-College Fiber Optic Network
This project involves the installation of underground conduit sections to supplement the existing campus ductbank system in order to support the extension of the Five College Fiber Optic System to the Mount Holyoke Campus.
Underground conduits will be installed at two locations: from the west side of Lower Lake Road to the Central Heating Plant and from a utility pole on Morgan Street along the west side of Mandelle to an electrical manhole close to 1837. This work is well underway and should finish soon.

Summer 06
Lower Lake Invasive Plant Removal & Replacement
Facilities Management is working with a consultant as well as the local conservation committee to remove invasive species and replant native plant materials.
Summer 06
Central Services Complex
Campus electrical requirements have exceeded the capacity of our centralized electrical service, switchgear and distribution cabling (i.e.: Science complex currently has its own electrical service). This project will increase the primary electrical voltage from 4,160v to 13,800v providing sufficient capacity for Science, the new Residence Hall and future growth. This new system will provide service redundancy from both Park and Morgan Streets. It will also replace our post WWII switchgear for which replacement parts are no longer available. To house this new switchgear, a small one story addition will be built on the north side of the Central Services Building.
Due to the phasing out of the older system and tie-in of the new, periodic power outages will be required. F.M. will make every effort to notify affected parties early and to schedule the work for least disruption. Also, from June until mid July the stairs from Porter parking lot, on the south side of the amphitheater, will be closed due to the excavation and construction of the small addition on the north side of the Central Services Building. The existing parking lot over the oil tanks will also be closed until mid summer.
Five dying and Woolly Adelgid infested hemlock trees will need to be removed in this area (Woolly Adelgid - a fluid-feeding insect that feeds on hemlock trees). While planning for this project the health of all the trees in this area is being assessed. We have scheduled resistor-graph testing for the mature sugar maple trees on either side of the walk since the upper canopy of these trees has shown signs of distress for the last few years. Replanting options are now being prepared and will be presented to the Campus Design and Advisory Committee in the early fall.
Summer 06
Carr Lab Heat Recovery Loop Installation
Coils filled with fluid to act as a heat exchanging medium will be installed in the existing ductwork to recapture lost heat in the air being exhausted from the building. The energy capture will substantially reduce the impact of the new residence hall on the existing heating plant.
Summer 06
Hooker Auditorium Renovation
The interior of Hooker Auditorium will undergo a complete renovation this summer. Long standing acoustical issues will be addressed. A new HVAC, lighting, mediation and sound system will be installed. We will fully renovate all interior finishes including carpeting, wall surfaces (acoustical panels, wood trim and paint), a new ceiling and window treatments. All of the existing seating will be sent out for repairs and re-upholstery. The seating will be re-installed in a revamped configuration and will provide some left handed tablets and some over-sized seats. The eastern elevator in Clapp will also be replaced this summer. This means of course that the general area in and around Hooker will be off limits until late August.
Spring 06
Emergency Power Syatem Installation in Dickinson Hall
Summer 06
1837 Hall
Major work will be required this summer to repair the failing exterior retaining walls and stairway west of 1837 Hall. Work involves excavation, concrete forming and masonry. The roadway between 1837 and the lake will be closed to vehicular traffic. Pedestrian traffic may be disrupted from time to time as well. This work will be noisy, dusty and will unfortunately be a nuisance to occupants of 1837 Hall if they spend large parts of the day in the building.
Spring 06

Summer 06
Mead Hall Interior & Exterior Renovation
Mead’s interior will undergo extensive renovations to the former kitchen and dining spaces this summer. Work will include the creation of new student rooms, a Golden Pear (reservable student dining space), student lounge and TV room. All bathrooms will be fully renovated and all of the building’s electrical wiring will be completely replaced. Exterior work will include cleaning and pointing of all masonry, painting of trim, new storm windows, gutters and downspouts, as well as construction of a permanent ADA compliant entrance ramp. Underground perimeter drainage improvements will be made as well.

The area around Mead will be a very busy construction site with lots of construction equipment will be creating noise an occasional traffic interruption.
Completed
Prospect Hall Pump Station and Overflow Tank
New Sanitary Sewer Overflow Tank installation at Willits/Prospect Parking Lot
Summer 06
Prospect Hall
There will be five separate projects happening concurrently inside and outside of Prospect Hall this summer. The work includes a small expansion of the kitchen to house a new walk-in freezer and cooler thus providing more kitchen prep and dry storage space for this popular student dining location. Other projects to be completed at Prospect include installation of a new sewer line, a new high voltage electrical service, replacement of the underground sewer chamber and pump system and a new hot water service for the building domestic hot water.
During June and July in the vicinity of the Prospect driveway and the Willits lower parking lot, there will be noisy construction equipment digging trenches and installing new utilities. Construction of an exterior load bearing masonry wall for the new walk-in cooler and freezer and interior kitchen work will be happening as well.
