New Sanitary Sewer Overflow Tank at Willits/Prospect Parking Lot

Prospect Hall and Willets Hallowell are both located at a relatively low elevation on campus; that means that the sewage generated by these facilities needs to be pumped up to the town sewer pipe. Up until now, if the primary pump and the back-up pump where both to fail and repairs could not be made before the pump chamber filled (a couple of hours), the potential existed for sewage to overflow into Stony Brook.

This situation actually occurred this past Autumn. At that time, the Department of Environmental Protection said: “Fix this now”. We hired a consulting civil engineer and after working together we concluded we would install an overflow tank that had about one day’s storage capacity. That would give us about 24 hours to fix the failed pumps, or install a replacement pump. One day’s sewage for these facilities is about 7500 gallons, so that’s the size of the precast concrete tank that went into the ground underneath the parking at Willets.
