This internship will allow the student to gain valuable experience
in all aspects of garden maintenance. Responsibilities include planting,
propagating, pruning, fertilizing, weeding, staking, dead-heading,
watering, lawn care, mapping plant beds, labeling, maintaining plant
records and other duties associated with maintaining a diverse collection
of plants in a variety of garden settings. Garden areas include
several traditional mixed perennial beds and borders, woodland plantings,
a rock garden, the Anne Pitt Heckel Staircase Garden and the Virginia
Craig Rhododendron Garden.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about plants and
gardening, and willing to learn about the identification and care
of a wide range of herbaceous and woody plants, as well as the daily
operation of a public botanic garden. The candidate will also be
motivated, hard-working, conscientious, and attentive to detail.
Physical requirements include being able to work in a variety of
weather conditions, lift up to 50 pounds and be in generally good
physical condition.
