Iris 'George'

Iris 'George' is a dwarf iris in the reticulata group. This iris flowers at about 6-8" with rich purple standards, and even darker purple, velvety falls with white and yellow markings. The flowers appear first, followed by narrow leaves which slowly lengthen to about 12". The foliage, which flops over when it reaches a certain length, can look a bit ratty at that time. Fortunantely this stage is brief and a small price to pay for these luscious, early blooms.

Similar iris in the reticulata group are Iris 'Katharine Hodgkin' with pale blue-grey-green standards and yellow-green falls, Iris 'Harmony' in two shades of blue, and Iris 'Natasha' which is white with green veins and yellow markings.

To view Iris 'George' in person, visit the front border of the Talcott Greenhouse, or the Drue Matthews Rock/Alpine Garden. Iris 'Katherine Hodgkins' is also in the rock garden.

Iris 'George" is grown from bulbs that are planted in the fall at the same time as tulip and daffodil bulbs. It is usually sold under the name Iris histrioides 'George,' but it is actually a hybrid. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil of average fertility.
