The Career Development Center is aware of the role cultural background plays in career development and while corporate culture is becoming more diverse, questions still arise. Can I wear my nose ring as a cultural, not fashion, statement? Or keep my natural hair as it is? What kind of assumptions will potential employers make based on my last name? Where can I find a job that won’t ask me to compromise my values? If a company has a diversity program, does it automatically mean I will be able to grow in the organization? How should I handle bias when I’m faced with it?

We have assembled a list of resources that may be helpful in providing support and opportunities for ALANA students.  This list is not meant to be comprehensive nor is it a substitute for using the CDC services; rather it is a resource to supplement your research efforts regarding career exploration and planning.

The CDC strongly encourages you to take advantage of our workshops and counseling services, as well as our library collection. The Multicultural and FP Resources section in the library includes books, notebooks, and magazines. Some books of note include Career Success is Color-blind: Overcoming Prejudice and Eliminating Barriers in the Workplace by Ollie Stevenson and Pathways to Career Success for Minorities: A Resource Guide to Colleges, Financial Aid, and Work edited by Tim Schaffert.  You will also find helpful information in the magazines, "African-American Career World,” Hispanic Career World," and “Equal Opportunity” published by Equal Opportunity Publications, Inc.
