Awards In The Humanities

Many national fellowships and scholarships are open to applicants in all fields, including various areas of the humanities. Please search the other scholarship pages on this site, as well as the world wide web and the CDC library resources for additional suitable awards.

American Graduate Fellowships  provide funding up to $50,000 to directly support the advanced education of stellar graduates of small colleges for graduate work in the humanities at top-tier private research institutions.  Fellowships are toward enrollment in doctoral programs at any of the 23 leading independent research universities in the U.S., Great Britain, and Ireland (see website for details).  The award is renewable for a second year and may be awarded annually for a period of five years.  The MHC deadline is late September.  This award was introduced to MHC in the spring of 2006.  MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED.

Beinecke Scholarship is an award of $32,000 for two years of graduate study in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Mount Holyoke may nominate one junior who is a U.S. citizen with outstanding abilities. Candidates must presently be receiving some financial aid from Mount Holyoke. MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED.

Humane Studies Fellowship is one of the awards offered by the Institute for Humane Studies, which gives scholarships up to $12,000 for undergraduate or graduate study in the United States or abroad. Last year IHS awarded more than 100 scholarships to outstanding undergraduates, graduate students, law students, and professional students who are interested in the classical liberal tradition. You must be a current sophomore or junior, or a senior planning to enter graduate school directly after graduating from MHC. All nationalities may apply.
Deadline: Fall.

James Madison Graduate Fellowships support U.S. citizens committed a career in teaching American history, government, or social studies at the secondary level. The "Junior Fellowships" are awarded to students who are about to complete, or have completed, their undergraduate course of study and plan to begin graduate work on a full-time basis. "Senior Fellowships" are awarded to teachers who wish to undertake work for a graduate degree on a part-time basis through summer and evening classes. The fellowships are intended exclusively for graduate study leading to a master’s degree. James Madison Fellows may attend any accredited institution of higher education in the United States. Mellon Fellowships in the Humanities provide full tuition and stipends for U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent residents who are seniors or recent graduates, for a first year of graduate work leading to the Ph.D. in preparation for a career in teaching and scholarship in a humanistic field of study (excluding the creative and performing arts). Deadline: Fall.
