Awards In The Social Sciences

Many national fellowships and scholarships are open to applicants in all fields, including various areas of the social sciences. Please search the other scholarship pages on this site, including awards in law, government, public service, and public policy, as well as the world wide web and the CDC library resources, for additional suitable awards.

Beinecke Scholarship is an award of $32,000 for two years of graduate study in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Mount Holyoke may nominate one junior who is a U.S. citizen with outstanding abilities. Candidates must presently be receiving some financial aid from Mount Holyoke. MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED. MHC Deadline: Fall.

Humane Studies Fellowship is one of the awards offered by the Institute for Humane Studies, which gives scholarships up to $12,000 for undergraduate or graduate study in the United States or abroad. Last year IHS awarded more than 100 scholarships to outstanding undergraduates, graduate students, law students, and professional students who are interested in the classical liberal tradition. You must be a current sophomore or junior, or a senior planning to enter graduate school directly after graduating from MHC. All nationalities may apply.  Deadline: Fall.

Jacob J. Javits Fellowships include full tuition and stipend for U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent U.S. residents for graduate work leading to a Ph.D. in humanities and social sciences or an MFA in the arts. The Javits Fellowship is awarded annually subject to approval of funding. Deadline: Fall.

James Madison Graduate Fellowships support U.S. citizens committed a career in teaching American history, government, or social studies at the secondary level. The "Junior Fellowships" are awarded to students who are about to complete, or have completed, their undergraduate course of study and plan to begin graduate work on a full-time basis. "Senior Fellowships" are awarded to teachers who wish to undertake work for a graduate degree on a part-time basis through summer and evening classes. The fellowships are intended exclusively for graduate study leading to a master’s degree. James Madison Fellows may attend any accredited institution of higher education in the United States. Deadline: Winter.

Young Communicators Fellowships are awards for aspiring writers and policy wonks. Juniors, seniors, and recent graduates may apply for a grant to take advantage of internships and other career-building opportunities. Awards up to $5,000. Deadlines: Spring/rolling.
