Awards Open To Non-U.S. Nationals

Please note that many awards closed to non-US citizens are open to permanent residents (green card holders). Other scholarship are open to all qualified candidates, regardless of citizenship. We encourage you to search for such awards by your field of study, using resources in the CDC library, and on the world wide web.

The "Opportunities for International Students" handout is another good resource for international students.  It contains scholarship organizations, scholarship names and descriptions, contacts and website information.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation is the largest source of funding in the world exclusively for graduate women. The Foundation supports scholars pursuing a vast spectrum of academic research; public school teachers promoting girls' achievement in math, science, and technology; and community activists helping to improve the lives of women and girls through education. Deadlines: Fall.

Datatel Scholars Foundation awards are open to Datatel clients such as Mount Holyoke College. MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED.  First Years, Sophomores and Juniors are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Scholarships (in four categories) range up to $2,500 and are awarded on a competitive basis (most winners have a 3.7 GPA or higher). There are no citizenship or age requirements for this award, but MHC gives preference to international students applying for the "Datatel Scholars Scholarship," one of the award categories. One category is reserved for children of Vietnam War Veterans and refugees from the Vietnam conflict. Another is for returning students (MHC FPs), and another for students in computer science. MHC Deadline: Winter.

Davis Projects for Peace invites undergraduates at the American colleges and universities in the Davis United world College Scholars Program (includes Mount Holyoke College) to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the summer months.  Through a competition on over 85 campuses, these 100 projects judged to be the most promising and do-able will be funded at $10,000 each.  The objective is to encourage and support today's motivated youth to create and tryout their own ideas for building peace. MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED.  All undergraduates are eligible to apply.  There are no citizenship or age requirements.  MHC Deadline: Winter 

Echoing Green Public Service Fellowships are two year $60,000 ($30,000 per year) awards for an innovative public service project anywhere in the world. There are no restrictions of age, citizenship, or grade point average. Fellowships offer funding of $60,000 to $90,000 over two years for individuals or partnerships to start-up and build innovative, sustainable projects and organizations that will effect social change. Deadline: Fall.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are open to applicants from every country of the world except the United Kingdom, normally under 30 years of age, for graduate study or a second Bachelor's Degree as an Affiliated Student at the University of Cambridge. Must apply for admission to Cambridge at the same time as applying for scholarship. Qualities sought include intellectual curiosity, willingness to independently engage in sustained intellectual endeavors, and take risks, and a history of successfully taking advantage of opportunities. Mount Holyoke endorsement in not required, but candidates for this very competitive award are encouraged to seek assistance from the fellowship coordinator. Deadline: November.

Humane Studies Fellowship is one of the awards offered by the Institute for Humane Studies, which gives scholarships up to $12,000 for undergraduate or graduate study in the United States or abroad. Last year IHS awarded more than 100 scholarships to outstanding undergraduates, graduate students, law students, and professional students who are interested in the classical liberal tradition. You must be a current sophomore or junior, or a senior planning to enter graduate school directly after graduating from MHC. All nationalities may apply. Deadline: Fall.

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship Program is a $50,000/year scholarship for graduate study in any field. The competition is open to all graduating seniors, as well as alumnae no more than 5 years after graduation. MHC can nominate two candidates. There are no citizenship requirements or restriction on location, but nominees must demonstrate financial need. MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED. Deadline: Spring, following candidates' confirmed acceptance into graduate school.

Lindbergh Grants Program was founded to further Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh's shared vision of a balance between technological advancement and environmental preservation. Each year grants of up to $10,580 (a symbolic amount representing the cost of the "Spirit of St. Louis") are given for projects in the following categories: agriculture; aviation/aerospace; conservation of natural resources; education (including humanities/education, the arts and intercultural communication); exploration; health; and waste minimization and management. Deadline: Spring.

Rhodes Scholarship is open to U.S. citizens between 18 and 24 for two or three years of study at Oxford University. (Citizens of other eligible countries must apply in their home countries even though they are studying in the U.S. Deadlines may be as early as June; see Rhodes web site for details.) Qualities sought include high intellectual and academic achievement, leadership, integrity of character, and the energy to use one’s talents to the full (as demonstrated by participation and success in sports). There is no limit on the number of candidates Mount Holyoke may endorse. MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED. MHC Deadline: Early fall.

Rotary Foundation Scholarships are open to citizens of the U.S. and other countries in which Rotary Clubs are located, for graduate or undergraduate study abroad. Awards cover one or three years of graduate study, or three to six months of intensive language study. U.S. citizens ordinarily apply in their home district; other students must apply in their home country. Applications may be due as early as 18 months prior to the beginning of study abroad. Deadlines vary by club and district; contact your local club. Deadlines: generally spring.

Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides $10,000 in funding to graduating seniors for a project that encompasses any activity that furthers the public good. The activity can be undertaken by the student alone or working through established charitable, religious, education, governmental, or other public service organizations.
Deadline: Winter
