Graduate Study
American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation is the largest source of funding in the world exclusively for graduate women. The Foundation supports scholars pursuing a vast spectrum of academic research; public school teachers promoting girls' achievement in math, science, and technology; and community activists helping to improve the lives of women and girls through education. Deadlines: Fall.
American Graduate Fellowships provide funding up to $50,000 to directly support the advanced education of stellar graduates of small colleges for graduate work in the humanities at top-tier private research institutions. Fellowships are toward enrollment in doctoral programs at any of the 23 leading independent research universities in the U.S., Great Britain, and Ireland (see website for details). The award is renewable for a second year and may be awarded annually for a period of five years. The MHC deadline is late September. This award was introduced to MHC in the spring of 2006. MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED.
Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund - Provides funding ($18,000 for 2008-2009) for advanced education and graduate study grants, as well as, for independent research or study projects which must be carried out in the U.S. These fellowships are awarded to candidates who have outstanding undergraduate records, have demonstrated a need for financial assistance, are citizens of the U.S., are enrolled in accredited colleges and universities in the U.S. and have received baccalaureate degrees. The amount of each fellowship covers tuition plus a stipend to be allocated towards room, board, living expenses and income taxes. The MHC deadline is in December. MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED
Doris Russell Graduate Scholarship in English is open to candidates seeking admission to Cambridge University who are graduates of Mount Holyoke College (and other designated colleges and universities). The scholarship is named in memory of Professor Doris Russell, former chairman of the English Department at Vassar, and is awarded on intellectual distinction to students proposing to read ENGLISH at Cambridge University either as affiliated students or research students. The value of this award is currently £6,000 (approximately $12,200. U.S. dollars). In seeking admission to the University, candidates should apply to Girton College as the college of their first choice. Candidates wishing to be registered as research students must apply to the University for registration as research students by applying online via: www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/. There is no special application form, but applicants wishing to apply should notify the Head of Tutorial & Admissions Office, Girton College, Cambridge, CB30JG, England, by 15 October 2007 enclosing their written work in support of their application.
Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Fellowships are awarded for exceptional creativity, broad understanding of physical principles, and outstanding potential for innovative research. Eligible applicants for must be students of the applied physical sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency. College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply. Fellows must hold tenure at one of the specified graduate schools. Deadline: Fall.
Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowships for Minorities is open to U.S. citizens or nationals (must have become a citizen by the application deadline) who are members of a minority group: Alaskan Natives (Eskimo or Aleut); Black/African Americans; Mexican Americans/Chicanas/Chicanos; Native American Indians; Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesian/Micronesian); and Puerto Ricans, for graduate study in research-based doctoral programs in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, and sciences. GRE scores are required. Deadline: Fall.
GEM Fellowship Program provides opportunities for underrepresented minority students to obtain M.S. degrees in engineering and Ph.D. degrees in engineering and the natural and physical sciences through a program of paid summer internships and graduate financial assistance. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen of Mexican American, American Indian, Black/African-American, Puerto Rican American and other Hispanic American ethnicity with a minimum GPA of 2.80/4.00 the M.S. program and 3.00/4.00 for the Ph.D. program. Deadline: Fall.
Humane Studies Fellowship is one of the awards offered by the Institute for Humane Studies, which gives scholarships up to $12,000 for undergraduate or graduate study in the United States or abroad. Last year IHS awarded more than 100 scholarships to outstanding undergraduates, graduate students, law students, and professional students who are interested in the classical liberal tradition. You must be a current sophomore or junior, or a senior planning to enter graduate school directly after graduating from MHC. All nationalities may apply. Deadline: Fall.
Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship Program is a $50,000/year scholarship for graduate study in any field. The competition is open to all graduating seniors, as well as alumnae no more than 5 years after graduation. MHC can nominate two candidates. There are no citizenship requirements or restriction on location, but nominees must demonstrate financial need. Deadline: Spring, following candidates' confirmed acceptance into graduate school. MHC NOMINATION IS REQUIRED.
Jacob J. Javits Fellowships include full tuition and stipend for U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent U.S. residents for graduate work leading to a Ph.D. in humanities and social sciences or an MFA in the arts. The Javits Fellowship is awarded annually subject to approval of funding. Deadline: Fall.
James Madison Graduate Fellowships support U.S. citizens committed a career in teaching American history, government, or social studies at the secondary level. The "Junior Fellowships" are awarded to students who are about to complete, or have completed, their undergraduate course of study and plan to begin graduate work on a full-time basis. "Senior Fellowships" are awarded to teachers who wish to undertake work for a graduate degree on a part-time basis through summer and evening classes. The fellowships are intended exclusively for graduate study leading to a master’s degree. James Madison Fellows may attend any accredited institution of higher education in the United States. Deadline: Winter.
Mellon Fellowships in the Humanities provide full tuition and stipends for U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent residents who are seniors or recent graduates, for a first year of graduate work leading to the Ph.D. in preparation for a career in teaching and scholarship in a humanistic field of study (excluding the creative and performing arts). Deadline: Fall.
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program seeks to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, mathematics, and engineering in the United States and to reinforce its diversity. The NSF awards approximately 1,000 new three-year Graduate Research Fellowships in March of each year. NSF Fellows are expected to contribute significantly to research, teaching, and industrial applications in science, mathematics, and engineering. Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent resident aliens of the United States. Those eligible to apply are college seniors, first-year graduate students, and others who have completed a limited amount of graduate study in science, mathematics, or engineering. Women who intend to pursue graduate degrees in engineering or in computer and information science and engineering and who meet the eligibility requirements above can apply for the additional WENG or WICS awards. Deadline: Fall.
Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans support thirty individuals a year for up to two years of graduate study in any subject anywhere in the U.S. Candidates must be either holders of Green Cards, naturalized citizens, or children of two naturalized citizen parents. Deadline: Fall.
