Biological Sciences
All students with majors or minors in sciences or mathemetics should consider participating in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at one of the many institutions offering them in the U.S. REU projects involve active participation by students in ongoing research programs or in research projects designed especially for the purpose.Beginning in November, the NSF web site lists opportunities by discipline; they include Astronomical Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Cyberinfrastructure, Department of Defense (DoD), Earth Sciences, Education and Human Resources, Engineering, Ethics and Values Studies, International Science and Engineering, Materials Research, Mathematical Sciences, Ocean Sciences, Physics, Polar Programs, and Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences.
Students with science or mathematics majors or minors are especially encouraged to apply for summer funding from the HHMI Undergraduate Science Education Program. Both first-year students and upperclassmen are eligible to apply. To apply to this program, check the box labeled "HHMI Summer Education Program" on the Universal Application form.
Biology and Biochemistry students are also eligible for funding from the Elaine N. Marieb Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship, which is awarded to rising junior or senior to promote research. It may be used to grant stipends, provide living expenses, travel or other expenses related to student's work. Preference is given to biology or biochemistry majors but this opportunity is open to all science majors. In addition, the Department may offer funding for other projects related to biology or biochemistry. You will automatically be considered for funding from these sources when you indicate on the Universal Application Fund that you are a Biology or Biochemistry major or minor.
Biology and Biochemistry majors are encouraged to apply for summer research fellowships sponsored by the Pfizer Global Research & Development division of Pfizer Inc. Each award provides $5,000, of which at least $3,500 goes to the student. Fellowship recipients spend the summer between their junior and senior years working on their own campus with a faculty mentor. Each department (Biology, Biochemistry, and Chemistry) may nominate up to two undergraduate biochemistry majors to apply for this award. For more information, contact Craig Woodard. To apply for this award, be sure to indicate in your ESSAY that you are applying for funds from the Pfizer program. If you are nominted, there is no guarantee that you request will be funded; however, you will also be eligible for funds from other MHC sources.
Professors in the department may offer opportunities for summer research -- please contact them directly.
There are many summer research opportunities in the fields of biology and biochemistry. For off-campus opportunities, please consult with faculty members for more information. These programs generally have deadlines in January or February.
