Global Studies Summer Fellowships
The GSSF provides financial support for students for collaborative student-mentor research abroad during the summer. While the mentor will ideally be a Mount Holyoke faculty member working with the student abroad, the mentor may also be an outside expert or an MHC faculty member who remains at MHC.
The international research project needs to involve close mentor-student cooperation, substantive engagement, and critical reflection upon one’s experience. Students are expected to complete their work and submit an independent study paper (295 or 395 level) by the end of the fall semester. Upon their return, students are required to submit a short reflection piece on their experience to the Center for Global Initiatives, and to give a presentation on their work at a college gathering (dept., program, other). For more details and examples of GSSF projects in previous years, see the CGI Web site.
All students, except graduating seniors, are encouraged to apply for the GSSF. Preference will be given to students who plan to work or do research abroad directly under a Mount Holyoke College faculty mentor and to students who are going to another country for the first time. The GSSF will normally not provide funding for a) the cost of a study program in another country, and b) airfare, housing, and food support for students going back to their home countries.
The GSSF is highly competitive.
To apply for these fellowships, please use the Universal Application form, and be sure to indicate that your project will take place in an international setting. This will ensure that your application is considered for GSSF funding -- and also, any other funds that might support the project you are proposing.
