Police Praise The Department of Public Safety received a "Special Recognition" award from the Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators December 18. The award was "in acknowledgement of the professionalism of public safety and law enforcement on your campus demonstrated by achieving police certification from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission." "Obviously, I am honored and very proud of the department," noted Paul Ominsky, the director of public safety. Mount Holyoke's public safety department is the first college or university police force in Massachusetts to gain state certification by a police oversight committee.

First-Rate Physics The Mount Holyoke chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) was selected as an Outstanding SPS Chapter for the 2002–2003 school year. Less than 10 percent of the SPS chapters nationwide are honored, about one per state. "Selection is based on the depth and breadth of SPS activities of your chapter in such areas as physics research, public science outreach, physics tutoring programs, hosting and representation at physics meetings, and providing social interaction for chapter members," said Gary White, director of the national Society of Physics Students, in a congratulatory letter. "This award is . . . an acknowledgment of your chapter's superior performance."

Who's Who Kudos The 2004 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges will include the names of 39 Mount Holyoke students who were selected as outstanding campus leaders. Students are chosen for the annual directory, first published in 1934, based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities, and potential for continued success.
