It was hard to imagine
playing golf when representatives from the College, United States
Golf Association (USGA), and the town of South Hadley braved the
cold to gather January 9 at the snow-covered future site of the
2004 U.S. Womens Open, the
Orchards Golf Club.
Yet anticipation of putts and birdies to come was in the chilly
air, as a sign bearing the logos of the USGA, Mount Holyoke, and
the 2004 Open was unveiled, while local television stations interviewed
and onlookers applauded. The unveiling served as an informal kickoff
for the event, which will be held June 28July 4, 2004. More
than 120,000 golf fans are expected to attend. The Orchards golf
course, located on MHCs campus, was designed by Donald Ross
and opened in 1922 as a nine-hole layout. He finished another
nine holes in 1927. The course spans more than 160 acres.
