New Course
The Avant-Garde in Russia and Georgia during the Twentieth Century
[same as Art History 290 (03)]
This course is about the early twentieth-century Russian-Georgian
avant-garde, and the Soviet official and unofficial art. The
great modernists, like Kandinsky, Malevich, and Kakabadze, will
be presented. Woven into the course will be discussion of the
political, ideological, and social contexts. Students will study
the similarities and differences between social realism in America
and socialist realism in the USSR and discover how American art
influenced Russian-Georgian nonconformist art. Course will be
illustrated with slides, videos, and films. Excursions to the
Yale University Art Gallery.

Music Notices
Performance Study and
Ensemble Auditions All students who have
not previously taken music lessons at Mount Holyoke and wish
to enroll in performance study must come for an audition/interview
Friday, January 30, from noon to 3 pm. Auditions for String
Chamber Music and Jazz Ensembles will also be held at this
time. Students should sign up for an audition appointment on
the bulletin board across from the music office.
Music 100 Exemption Exam The Music 100 Exemption Exam will be
given Friday, January 30 at 4 pm. Students may enroll initially
in performance studies without prerequisite, but continued study
after the initial semester is dependent on enrollment in or exemption
from Music 100.
Grant-in-Aid Grant-in-aid for
private instruction is available for students who receive financial
aid from the College. Applications are available in the music
office and must be submitted by the deadline, Friday, January
30, at 4 pm. Students must apply every semester for grant-in-aid.

Flute Choir The first meeting of Flute Choir will take place
Thursday, January 29, from 5:30 to 7 pm in the Warbeke Room in
Pratt Hall. All flutists are welcome!
Klezmer Band The first meeting of Klezmer Band will take place
Tuesday, February 3, at 6:30 pm in Room 109 in Pratt Hall. All
instrumentalists are invited!
Early Music Auditions Auditions for Early Music Ensembles (Collegium,
Voces Feminae, Euridice Ensembles) will be held Friday, January
30, in Room 210 from 1 to 4 pm. Students should sign up for an
audition appointment on the bulletin board across from the music
office.
Office of Admission Positions The
Office of Admission has several employment positions open to
current students for the summer and academic year. Academic
year positions include student administrative assistant, student
admission board, tour guide, and admission fellow. Summer positions
include tour guide and admission fellow.
Candidates should have strong presentation, interpersonal, and organizational
skills. Applications will be available in the Office of Admission foyer beginning
Wednesday, January 28. Applications are due Wednesday, February 11.
There will be an information session about these positions
Wednesday, February 4 at 7 pm in the Betty Shabazz Cultural
Center. Representatives of the Office of Admission will explain
each position in detail, answer questions, and distribute
applications. You do not have to attend this information session to apply
for these positions; however, it is recommended.
