Mars Rocks Darby
Dyar, associate professor of geology and astronomy, was quoted
in a January 18 article in the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution about the progress of Spirit, the six-wheeled rover exploring
the surface of Mars. "The
rover's-eye images from Mars are dazzling, but the chemical
analyses of rocks and soils will be the true gold mine to scientists
because we hope they will tell us if there was water on Mars," Dyar
said. "Understanding the chemistry and mineralogy of the
rocks will allow us to decode the geologic history of Mars and
evaluate the possibility that life could have existed there." Dyar
and her students are conducting research for NASA that will help
in the interpretation of information about minerals on the red
planet's surface gathered by Spirit and its twin, Opportunity.
Innovation in Action The January 15 edition of the Daily
Hampshire Gazette reported on several initiatives begun under the banner
of the 2010 Innovation Fund. ''Faculty, staff, and
students have responded enthusiastically to this opportunity,
spinning out new plans and new ideas for curricular innovation,
interdisciplinary initiatives, and study-away experiences,'' President
Joanne V. Creighton told the Gazette. ''I am delighted
to see the range of projects that are now percolating in our
community and invigorating the intellectual life of the College.'' Staff
writer Cheryl Wilson also spoke with Sarah Bacon and Sharon Stranford,
both assistant professors of biological sciences, and Anita Magovern,
the College's Catholic chaplain and adviser to CAUSE, or
Creating Awareness and Unity for Social Equality. The 2010 Innovation
Fund provides seed money for creative ideas for projects that
support the goals of The Plan for Mount Holyoke 2010.
