In Memoriam George E. Hall, professor emeritus and former chairman of the chemistry department, died January 8. Mr. Hall, who taught at the College from 1946 to 1979, was a resident of South Hadley, Massachusetts. He received a B.S. with highest honors in 1938 and a Ph.D. in 1942 in chemistry from Yale University, where he was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Sigmi Xi. During World War II, Mr. Hall served as a captain in the U.S. Army, received the Purple Heart, and was decorated with the Soldier's Medal. During sabbaticals from Mount Holyoke, he was a visiting research fellow and professor at California Institute of Technology; the University of Bristol in England; and University College, London. Mr. Hall was a member of the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Association of University Professors, and the New England Association of Chemistry Teachers. A lifelong and accomplished sailor, Mr. Hall was a member of the Ocean Cruising Club and the Cruising Club of America. For 52 years, he was a member of the Mystic Seaport Museum. Mr. Hall was predeceased by his wife, Sage Adams Hall, who died November 17, 2003. Memorial gifts may be made to Mount Holyoke College Distinguished Chemists Fund, Development Office, South Hadley, MA 01075. A memorial service for Mr. and Mrs. Hall will be held Saturday, February 7, at 2 pm in Abbey Chapel.
