Tony Smith to Speak on Democracy Efforts in Iraq
Tony Smith, Cornelia M. Jackson Professor of Political Science
at Tufts University, will give a public talk titled "Can
America Democratize Iraq?" Wednesday, February 11, at
7:30 pm in Gamble Auditorium.
Smith is the author of the highly acclaimed book, America's
Mission: The United States and the Worldwide Struggle for Democracy
in the Twentieth Century (Princeton University Press, 1994).
The book stands out as the most comprehensive historical and
comparative study of successes and failures in U.S. efforts to
promote democracy abroad.
Smith's talk, which is free and open to the public, will explore the Bush
administration's current occupation strategy in Iraq in light of historical
and comparative experiences.
