MHC Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sport Day

Felicia Hall will speak in Gamble Auditorium at 7:30 pm on February 5.

In commemoration of the eighteenth annual National Girls and Women in Sport (NGWS) Day, Mount Holyoke has invited Felicia Hall to speak on campus February 5. Hall, a three-year letter-winner in basketball at the University of Iowa, earned a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law and is a member of the New Jersey State Bar. She formerly served as vice president of team operations for the WNBA Charlotte Sting and managed the women's basketball sports marketing division at Nike.

In her talk, titled "If You Let Me Play Sports," Hall will discuss Title IX and the importance of sport in the lives of girls and women. According to Laurie Priest, the College's director of athletics, Hall is "a dynamic speaker our athletes will very much enjoy. Her message is not only relevant to issues in sports today, but she is engaging and a true inspiration for our students." Hall will speak in Gamble Auditorium at 7:30 pm.

The United States Congress chartered NGWS Day in 1986 to honor female athletic achievement and recognize the importance of sports and fitness for girls and women. Since its inception, the day has evolved to include acknowledgment of the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports. According to Priest, Mount Holyoke has always celebrated NGWS Day. "We have supported Mary Lyon's legacy by encouraging women to be active in all types of sports activities," Priest said. "We are particularly proud of our student athletes and the many contributions they have made to our campus and community."

In conjunction with NGWS Day, the College will hold its fourth annual Spirit Day on Saturday, February 7, during two home contests against Smith College: swimming and diving at 1 pm and basketball at 2 pm. Organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Spirit Day is a recognition of the College's varsity sports teams. This year it will feature door prizes, raffles, and contests, as well as the crew team's annual 24-hour "ergathon," in which rowers will take turns rowing from 3 pm Friday until 3 pm Saturday. Donors to the ergathon will be given raffle tickets for prizes to be announced at the basketball game's halftime.
