Celebration of Student Achievement

The Celebration of Student Achievement will take place Monday, February 9, in Blanchard's Great Room at 4 pm. The event is designed to recognize leadership by students and recent graduates, as demonstrated through academic excellence, community service, and outstanding accomplishment.

Honorees
Phi Beta Kappa Society

The following students have been elected into membership of Phi Beta Kappa by the Theta chapter of Massachusetts, based on at least five semesters of study at Mount Holyoke College. At the celebration, Holly E. Hanson, assistant professor of history; James Hartley, associate professor of economics; and Stan P. Rachootin, professor of biological sciences and president of the Theta chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, will welcome the students as members of Phi Beta Kappa.

Recognition of Student Leaders
Karen Remmler, associate professor of German studies and codirector of the Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts; Anita Magovern, Catholic chaplain to the College; Liz Braun, acting associate dean of the College/dean of students; and Susan Pliner, associate director of the Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts' Speaking, Arguing, and Writing Program, will make presentations. The Weissman Center Leadership Award for Excellence
This award recognizes commitment to the ideals and goals of the Weissman Center as demonstrated through passionate and critical engagement in one or more of the Weissman Center's programs. This year's winners are Sophia A. Apostola '04, Emily T. Mack '04, and Asha C. Strazzero-Wild '04.

The Maurice L. Rabbino Award
The Maurice L. Rabbino Award, this year given to Clare M. Robbins '04, was established in 1978 by Irma L. Rabbino '53 to honor her father by recognizing a student "who has made an especially significant contribution to the life of Mount Holyoke College."

The Helen Warren Smith Award
The Helen Warren Smith Award, this year given to Maria D. Osorio '04, honors a student "whose interest, involvement, and service to the Mount Holyoke College community have been outstanding." The award was established in 1979 by Helen Warren Smith, class of 1908.

The Frances H. Williams Award
This year's winner of the Frances H. Williams Award will be announced at the ceremony. In 1981, the family of Frances H. Williams, class of 1919, established an award in her honor to be presented annually to a minority member of the student body "who best exemplifies the ideals to which her own life has been dedicated—the capacity to create a dream and the passion to pursue it; the ability to soar with that goal whether it be academic excellence, social justice, or service to others."

The Mount Holyoke College Community Service Award
Kristen A. Ripley '04 and Asha C. Strazzero-Wild '04 are this year's winners of the Mount Holyoke College Community Service Award. Made possible by the College Bookstore, this award honors students who demonstrate a high level of personal commitment to the community beyond the campus.

The Karen Snyder Sullivan Memorial Travel Award
This year's winner of the Karen Snyder Sullivan Memorial Travel Award is Maya M. Garcia '05. This award provides assistance for a student who has not previously traveled abroad to plan a trip that satisfies her curiosity and heightens her awareness of other cultures. The award was established in 1986 in memory of Karen Snyder Sullivan '68 by her husband Craig.
