Female
Athletes Honored at MHC
National Girls and
Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), celebrated February 5, began in 1987
as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman. Since
that time, NGWSD has evolved into a way of recognizing current
sports achievements and the positive influence of sports participation.
The day is celebrated in all fifty states with community-based
events and activities that honor achievements and encourage the
participation of girls and women in sports. In honor of the seventeenth
annual NGWSD, the College will host a free sports clinic (including
volleyball, tennis, and soccer) for girls ages eight to thirteen
on Saturday, February 8. The event will be held in Kendall Hall
from noon to 4 pm. In addition, Zayra F. Calderon, president and
chief executive officer of the Futures Golf tour, the official
developmental tour of the Ladies Professional Golf Association
(LPGA), will be on campus speaking with student athletes. Registration
for the sports clinic for girls, and more information about National
Girls and Women and Sports Day, can be found at http://www.mtholyoke.edu/athletics/ngwsd
or by contacting Mihisha Evans-Henderson at mhenders@mtholyoke.edu
