One Thousand Points of Might

FRED LEBLANC

Junior Jessica Justice scored her thousandth career point during the Lyons' game against Smith January 22. She is the fifth player in MHC basketball history to reach this milestone in scoring and is now only ninety-six points away from setting a new MHC record for most points in a career.

Jessica Justice '03, the starting center and leading scorer for the Mount Holyoke basketball team, scored her one thousandth career point January 22, four minutes into MHC's game against Smith College. With 203 points scored this season, Justice has helped the team to its current 9–6 record. She has the highest field goal percentage (55.8), and leads the team in rebounds with 153 (51 offensive, 102 defensive). Justice is now only ninety-six points away from setting a new Mount Holyoke record for most points in a career (Elise C. Wright '87 holds the current record of 1,106 points). With an average of 13.5 points per game, and eight regular-season contests remaining, Justice may even break the career record this season, allowing her to cushion the lead during her senior year. A neuroscience and behavior major, Justice serves as cochair of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

While in high school at Central Bucks East in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Justice earned two letters in basketball, one letter in field hockey, and one letter in track and field. Her high school basketball accomplishments include being named Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, and team captain, and being selected to the All-Intelligencer First Team. She was also a participant in the 1999 William Penn All-Star Classic.

Justice made an immediate impact on the Mount Holyoke basketball program, as she was named to both the Seven Sisters All-Tournament Team and the All-Conference Team for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference during her first and second years. She is already in the Mount Holyoke record books for most points in a season (415 points in 2000–2001 and 393 in 1999–2000—the two highest totals). She also leads in average points per game in a season with 17.3 (2000–2001).
