MHC Equestrians Ride to Victory at Tournament of Champions

DARRYL QUARLES

The Mount Holyoke riding team captured first place in the Tournament of Champions held January 26 at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio. Twenty-five other top equestrian teams from NCAA Divisions I, II, and III were invited to this prestigious annual competition. This year's tournament came down to the wire, as Skidmore College and Mount Holyoke were tied until the last event.

MHC open rider Laena Romond '05 was named the Champion Rider of the tournament due to her impressive victory in the Championship Class event, which included all the first-place riders from twelve classes. Romond had qualified for this event by placing first in her Open Flat and Open Fences classes. Nicole Eula '04 also competed in the Championship Class, as a result of her first-place finish in the Intermediate Fences event.

Three other MHC riders placed in their respective classes at this competition: Elizabeth Mo '04 placed second in the Walk-Trot; Leigh Quarles '04 finished second in the Intermediate Flat; and Diana Rosenbaum '05 placed fourth in the Walk-Trot-Canter. Novice class riders Karin Corbett '05 and Zuzana Estvanik '02 also represented Mount Holyoke.

Mount Holyoke was named Champion College of the tournament with thirty-four points, just one point ahead of Skidmore College. Quarles had the pressure of competing in the last event of the tournament, knowing that she needed to place first or second in order for Mount Holyoke to win. She clinched the victory for the Lyons by placing second in the Intermediate Flat. Skidmore was named Reserve Champion College with thirty-three points; Stonehill College finished third with twenty-nine points; Findlay University (the 2001 national champions) placed fourth; and Colby College placed fifth.
