Admitting Athletes Laurie Priest, MHC director of athletics, was quoted in a January 7 story in the New York Times Educational Supplement about how elite NCAA Division III schools are competing with increasing fervor for student athletes. According to Priest, women student athletes are being sought more aggressively by coed and single-sex institutions alike. “Athletics is important at all institutions these days,” Priest told the Times. “It also allows us to cast a wider net for women who might be interested in a women's college.”

Psyched about Fromm-Reichmann Gail Hornstein, MHC professor of psychology and education and author of To Redeem One Person Is to Redeem the World: The Life of Frieda Fromm-Reichmann (the first biography of Fromm-Reichmann, a maverick psychiatrist who successfully treated schizophrenics and other psychotic patients), and Joanne Greenberg, author of I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, talked with Psychology Today editor-in-chief Robert Epstein about the life and work of Fromm-Reichmann January 29 on Psychology Today Live on eyada.comtalkradio.network.

Pas de Deux Charles Flachs and Rose Marie Wurzer, MHC assistant professors of dance, are featured in Dance magazine's February 2001 feature “Sweathearts: Five Dance Couples, Onstage and Off.” The two dancers met at the Cincinnati Ballet when Flachs offered to help Wurzer learn back walkovers for her role as one of the dolls in The Nutcracker and have been married since 1987. Writes author Vicki Sanders,“He may have danced Albrecht to her Giselle, Franz to her Coppélia, but the romance of those fictional pairings is nothing compared to Charles Flachs's real-world love affair with his wife, Rose Marie Wurzer. The life that they are living with their two children in a cozy little cape in South Hadley, Massachusetts, may not have the heightened fantasy of the count who seduces the peasant girl, but, after thirteen years of marriage—the last five of them spent team-teaching ballet at Mount Holyoke College—the relationship does have the earmarks of a match made in heaven.”
