MHC Milestones

Sir Brad
On January 31, Brad Leithauser was awarded the medal of the Order of the Falcon by the President of Iceland, making him a Knight of the Republic. The award is given for "services to Iceland or mankind." Leithauser is being honored for the work he's done over many years to bring Icelandic literature to an English readership.

Volunteer Spirit
The Peace Corps recently announced that Mount Holyoke came in at number 13 on its list of small colleges and universities that produced the most Peace Corps volunteers in 2004. While MHC has 20 alumnae volunteers, the University of Chicago, which is number one, has 30 alumni volunteers. Barnard College ranked 22, while Bryn Mawr came in at 24. To view the entire list, go to www.peacecorps.gov/news/resources/stats/pdf/schools2005.pdf.

And the Awards Go to …
The following students' names were inadvertently omitted from the list of Sarah Williston Scholars at the Celebration of Student Achievement: Saabira Chaudhuri, Sixuan Chen, Najiyah Edun, Khadija Hasan, Melanie Hnot, Sarah Njoroge, A Oo, and Marzanna Szeraszewicz. The award ceremony, which took place Monday, February 7, in Blanchard's Great Room, is designed to recognize leadership by students and recent graduates, as demonstrated through academic excellence, community service, and outstanding accomplishment. For a complete list of award winners, go to www.mtholyoke.edu/offices/comm/csj/012805/studentachievement.shtml.
