Summer
2004 Global Summer Studies Fellows and advisers. |
Students interested
in summer internships overseas have a wide range of work and study
opportunities, thanks to Mount Holyoke's Center for Global Initiatives
(CGI) and Career Development Center (CDC).
According to Anita
Deeg, CGI's coordinator for educational opportunities abroad,
the CGI positions fall into two categories: Global Summer Studies
Fellowships (GSSF) and CGI International Internships. Students
are responsible for setting up their own GSSF programs in consultation
with Mount Holyoke faculty.
Students may work
with MHC faculty or, if appropriate, may be paired with faculty
at foreign colleges and universities who work in the students'
area of interest. Last year's projects included a study of Arctic
climate and a study in Great Britain on the treatment and effects
of Lyme disease. For a complete listing of summer 2004 projects,
go to www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/programs/global/ii/gssf2004.html.
Students interested
in the GSS Fellowship must arrange their own program under the
supervision of a MHC faculty member. Applications are due March
1.
Working with faculty,
alumnae, and MHC parents, Deeg has assembled an interesting and
diverse array of international internships, including a position
at the Daily Star in Beirut, Lebanon, and three positions in Costa
Rica. So far, there are 14 potential internships in six countries.
For a complete listing of internships and more complete information
about them, go to www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/programs/global/ii/cgi_internships.html.
Students interested
in participating in a CGI International Internship must meet with
Deeg before February 23 to discuss the appropriateness of particular
internships for the student's career and academic path. Applications
are also due March 1.
The CDC also has
abundant print and online resources for international summer internships.
A good place for students to begin their search is the CDC's publication
Developing an Internship Abroad Resource List, which includes
Internet and library resources and contains other useful information.
According to Azanda Seymour, CDC's assistant director of internships,
students can find connections with organizations such as the International
Partnership for Service Learning and Leadership -- which places
students in Ecuador, India, Jamaica, France, the Philippines,
Russia, or Mexico -- and Cultural Embrace in Madrid, France, Rome,
or Sydney.
