Attention Students Interested in Teaching in Urban School Settings
The Holyoke Professional Development School is sponsoring a full-day field visit to Holyoke High School and William Dean Technical High School, Thursday, March 7. MHC students interested in learning about teaching in an urban setting are invited to attend. During the field visit, students will have the opportunity to visit classrooms, meet with teachers and administrators, eat lunch with students, and generally experience an urban high school environment. To make a reservation to attend this Holyoke field visit, contact Gayle Higgins in the Reese Psychology and Education Building, room 303, by February 27.

Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship (Sophomores and Juniors) The mission of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education. The Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Program will provide awards of up to $30,000 per year for the final one-to-three years of undergraduate study for students who either are attending a four-year college or university or wish to transfer to a four-year college or university from a community college or other two-year institution. The deadline for receipt of materials by the Career Development Center (CDC) is March 8. To be eligible, a student must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation representative at his/her institution. Direct applications from students will not be accepted. Mount Holyoke may nominate one student. Students must also have completed at least all first-year credits at a four-year college or university, or a community college or other two-year institution, and must have a high level of achievement, as demonstrated by superior grades, academically rigorous courses, and participation in challenging extracurricular activities, especially those demonstrating leadership potential. Note that United States citizenship or residency is not required for this award. For more information, interested candidates should contact Katerina King at the Career Development Center at kpking@mtholyoke.edu or x2080 as soon as possible. Further information, instructions, and application materials are available at www.jackkentcookefoundation.org.

Judith Reppy Women's Studies Independent Research Grant The Women's Studies Program welcomes spring applications for the Judith Reppy Women's Studies Independent Research Grant. This grant is made possible by the generosity of Judith Voris Reppy, who graduated magna cum laude from the College in 1958 and went on to earn a master's degree from Yale University and a doctorate in economics from Cornell University. She has directed the Peace Studies Program at Cornell and has studied the economics of defense, security, and peace for many years. The Judith Reppy Women's Studies Independent Research Grant provides funds for MHC students pursuing independent study projects related to the study of women. The grant is intended to provide assistance for projects that could be implemented or enhanced by outside financial support. Grants will be awarded based on the merit of the project proposal and availability of funds. Preference will be given to women's studies majors and minors whose projects, in whole or in part, meet course requirements for the following women's studies courses: WS 390, WS 395, and WS 295. Grants will not be awarded for projects that earn credit in other academic departments or programs. Applications must secure the signature of a women's studies faculty member who is willing to serve as adviser for the project. Although preference will be given to women's studies majors and minors, applicants may also be students whose projects earn women's studies credit, but whose majors or minors are in other disciplines. Applications are welcomed from an individual student, a student team, or a student/faculty team. The grant may be used to meet expenses incurred in completing the project and for expenses such as travel, conference fees, books, photocopying, postage, printing, telephone, or child care. Applicants should be as specific as possible in submitting predicted research expenses or expenses already incurred. A detailed report will be required upon completion of the project. The deadline for the spring 2002 review of applications is Friday, March 8. Applications are available at the women's studies office located in the library, room 415.
