The Five College dance
department will present a faculty dance concert February 27 and
28 and March 1 at 8 pm in Kendall's studio theatre. The
program consists of a performance of "Suspension,”
a seminal piece by modern dance pioneer May O'Donnell, and
the choreographic work of the following: MHC dance professors
Jim Coleman and Terese Freedman; University of Massachusetts,
Amherst, associate professor Billbob Brown; and guest artists
Mark Davis of Smith College; Amie Dowling and Julie Lichtenberg
of Amherst College; and Fritha Pengelly of Hampshire College.
There will be a reception following the Friday evening performance.
During a two-week intensive J-Term course, Associate Professor
of Dance Charles Flachs and Lida Nelson Smith, guest choreographer
for Modern Dance Repertory, worked with a cast of seven women
(including five Mount Holyoke students) to prepare for the performance
of O'Donnell's work. A former member of O'Donnell's
dance company, Smith remains a friend of the choreographer, who
is now ninety-six . O'Donnell created "Suspension,”
a thirteen-minute composition, in 1943, inspired by T. S. Eliot's
words, which she often includes with program notes: "At
the still point of the turning world . . . . there the dance is.”
Ticket prices are $10 for the general public and $5 for students
and senior citizens. There will be an open dress rehearsal Wednesday,
February 26, at 8 pm. Admission is $2. For reservations, email
