Debating
Society Hosts Tournament March 4-5
The Mount Holyoke
Debating Society will hold its annual competition March 4–5. The College tournament, nationally renowned
for its organization and efficiency, is a perennial favorite
among colleges and universities on the eastern seaboard. Last
year more than 50 teams participated, from as nearby as Amherst,
Massachusetts, and as far away as Williamsburg, Virginia. This
year’s tournament will draw many prestigious schools, including
Harvard, Brown, William and Mary, Johns Hopkins, and Bowdoin.
The College’s debating society, founded more than 100 years ago, is the
oldest collegiate debating society for women in the U.S. The group has 49 members
this year. Team coach Vinnie Ferraro, Ruth Lawson Professor of Politics and chair
of politics, described the team as “both talented and young. Their commitment
to speaking effectively is powerful and deep. They learn quickly and are developing
into first-rate debaters. I have no doubt that as they mature they will establish
Mount Holyoke as a power on the intercollegiate debating circuit.” He added
that the debaters are “fun to work with—most of them have finely
developed senses of humor and are willing to experiment with different speaking
techniques.”
This year’s tournament will begin with the General Assembly in Hooker Auditorium
Friday, March 4, at 5 pm. Debates will be held in Ciruti, Clapp, Kendade, and
Reese Friday and Saturday. The final debates will be held in Hooker late Saturday
afternoon. For more information, email the Debating Society’s campus liaison
