Ackmann, senior lecturer in women’s studies,
received the 2005 media award from the American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)—New England
section. The award
honored Ackmann’s book, The Mercury 13: The True Story
of Thirteen Women and the Dream of Space Flight, and was
presented in ceremonies February 16 in Boston. AIAA represents
industry
and education leaders in the global aerospace community. Last
fall Ackmann’s book also received the Earhart Medal for
outstanding research on women and aviation. The medal was awarded
by the Ninety Nines, the international organization of women
pilots, at the group’s conference in Atlantic City.

Luck of the Irish
Margaret
M. McAuliffe ’05 was chosen as a member of the
colleen’s court for the annual Holyoke St. Patrick’s
Parade. McAuliffe, who was one of five finalists for the title
of grand colleen, was chosen from among an original field of
18 contestants. The selection took place during the fifty-first
annual Grand Colleen Banquet. The colleen pageant is open to
women between the ages of 17 and 22 who live in either South
Hadley or Holyoke and are of Irish descent. The parade this year
takes place on March 20.
