Andrea’s
Story: Health Services Sponsors Presentation on Bulimia
|

Andrea Smeltzer |
Andrea Smeltzer was a dynamic and spirited
young woman, an exemplary student with a passion for life. After
graduating from Pitzer College in California, she hoped to work
with a humanitarian agency like Amnesty International. On June
16, 1999, after a 13-month struggle with bulimia, Andrea died
in her sleep when an electrolyte imbalance caused her heart to
stop.
On March 3–4, Andrea’s parents, Tom and Doris Smeltzer, will come
to Mount Holyoke College to tell the story of their daughter through photographs,
journal entries, and poems. With the knowledge they have gained from experts
in the field and their daughter’s words, the Smeltzers will describe the
factors that contribute to the development of an eating disorder, the warning
signs, and approaches to use when speaking with a suspected sufferer, as well
as the necessary components of an effective treatment plan. This presentation
is intended to promote understanding without judgment and encourage individuals
to take action in the areas of prevention and treatment of this often silent
epidemic.
The March 3 presentation is open to students and the general public and starts
at 7:30 pm in Gamble Auditorium. Faculty and staff are invited to an additional
session on March 4 at 9 am in Dwight 101. Both programs are
free of charge and are sponsored
by the Mount Holyoke College Purington Fund and College
