Cast Glass Sculptor to Speak at Gamble Auditorium March 2

Sculptor Howard Ben Tré

Plans are afoot to renovate the area in front of the Mount Holyoke Art Museum to create an outdoor gathering space. As the centerpiece of this project, the museum is planning to commission a large outdoor sculpture. A selection committee of faculty, staff, and students has developed a list of three possible sculptors for the commission who will be invited to campus to meet with members of the community and make presentations. The first, Howard Ben Tré, will speak about his work on March 2 in Gamble Auditorium at 4:30 pm. He will also talk with students from the advanced sculpture class about creating public works of art.

A pioneer in the use of cast glass as a sculptural medium, Ben Tré is internationally known for his unique sculptures and large-scale works of art for public and private spaces. His technical innovations have allowed him to extend his mastery of cast glass and to create monumental sculptures that can survive the rigors of outdoor installation. Among his many works are the award-winning fountains and seating created for Post Office Square in Boston and a sited sculpture for the plaza at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence. Ben Tré’s work can be seen in more than 85 museums and public collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC.

Ben Tré is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He received his B.S.A. from Portland State University and an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. He is a three-time recipient of both a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and a Rhode Island State Council of the Arts fellowship. He was also recognized in 1996 by the First Annual Pell Awards for Excellence in the Arts. He resides in Providence, Rhode Island.he
