Special Invitation: Five College Series on the Contemplative
Mind and Higher Education Chancellor David K. Scott would like to
extend an all-campus invitation to Mount Holyoke staff, faculty, and
students to participate in Wherever You Go There You Are: Living Your
Life As If It Really Mattered, a series of free events that will take
place in March on the University of Massachusetts and Amherst College
campuses. Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor of medicine and founder of the Center
for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University
of Massachusetts, Worcester, and a nationally known teacher of mindfulness
meditation, will give a talk at the UMass Campus Center March 14 at
8 pm. The following day, from 9 am to noon, Kabat-Zinn will offer a
half-day workshop for Five College staff, faculty, and graduate student
employees in the Student Union Ballroom at UMass. This event requires
preregistration. On Thursday afternoon, March 15, from 4 to 6 pm in
the Octagon building at Amherst College, Five College faculty are invited
to attend a dialogue with Kabat-Zinn. Preregistration is required. Kabat-Zinn
is one of the leading figures in mindfulness meditation in the United
States. He is the author of Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom
of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness (Delta, 1991)
and Wherever You Go There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday
Life (Hyperion, 1994). For more information and to register, email Phyllis
Robinson at phyllis@chancellor.umass.edu or call her at 577-1916. Gender and Transgender Issues An informal student
task force will host an education workshop on gender and transgender
issues Sunday, March 4, from 2 to 5 pm in the Torrey living room. The
meeting will be facilitated by Aaron Hans, a gender educator and graduate
student in social justice at the University of Massachusetts. This event
is open to the entire MHC community. For more information, contact Grace
Bianciardi at gabianci@mtholyoke.edu or x4027 or Marty Checchi at machecch@mtholyoke.edu

This grant provides funds for Mount Holyoke College students pursuing independent study projects related to the study of women. Preference will be given to women's studies majors and minors whose projects meet course requirements for the following women's studies courses: WS 295, WS 390, and WS 395. Students whose majors are in other disciplines may apply, but their projects must earn women's studies credit. Applicants must secure the signature of a women's studies faculty member who is willing to serve as adviser for the project. Grants will not be awarded for projects that earn credit in other academic departments or programs. The deadline for the spring 2001 review of applications is Friday, March 9. Contact Pat Serio at x2257 for an application. |
