Clothing Drive for F.R.E.S.H. Start March 5–14

The Community Service Volunteer Program and the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life are sponsoring a clothing drive for resdents of F.R.E.S.H. Start, a a new program in South Hadley that serves eighteen young women, ages twelve through eighteen, who have committed minor offenses. Needed most are jeans, T-shirts, and sleepwear (especially sizes 12–14).
Collection boxes will be in dorms and academic buldings, as well as in Eliot House, Blanchard Campus Center, and Mary Woolley Hall. For more information, contact Jamie Miller at x6039, Judith Ellenburg at 534-1565, or Anita Magovern at x2787.

 

Special Invitation: Five College Series on the Contemplative Mind and Higher Education Chancellor David K. Scott would like to extend an all-campus invitation to Mount Holyoke staff, faculty, and students to participate in Wherever You Go There You Are: Living Your Life As If It Really Mattered, a series of free events that will take place in March on the University of Massachusetts and Amherst College campuses. Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor of medicine and founder of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts, Worcester, and a nationally known teacher of mindfulness meditation, will give a talk at the UMass Campus Center March 14 at 8 pm. The following day, from 9 am to noon, Kabat-Zinn will offer a half-day workshop for Five College staff, faculty, and graduate student employees in the Student Union Ballroom at UMass. This event requires preregistration. On Thursday afternoon, March 15, from 4 to 6 pm in the Octagon building at Amherst College, Five College faculty are invited to attend a dialogue with Kabat-Zinn. Preregistration is required. Kabat-Zinn is one of the leading figures in mindfulness meditation in the United States. He is the author of Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness (Delta, 1991) and Wherever You Go There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life (Hyperion, 1994). Gender and Transgender Issues An informal student task force will host an education workshop on gender and transgender issues Sunday, March 4, from 2 to 5 pm in the Torrey living room. The meeting will be facilitated by Aaron Hans, a gender educator and graduate student in social justice at the University of Massachusetts. This event is open to the entire MHC community. Judith Reppy Women's Studies Independent Research Grant The Women's Studies Program welcomes spring applications for the Judith Reppy Women's Studies Independent Research Grant. This grant provides funds for Mount Holyoke College students pursuing independent study projects related to the study of women. Preference will be given to women's studies majors and minors whose projects meet course requirements for the following women's studies courses: WS 295, WS 390, and WS 395. Students whose majors are in other disciplines may apply, but their projects must earn women's studies credit. Applicants must secure the signature of a women's studies faculty member who is willing to serve as adviser for the project. Grants will not be awarded for projects that earn credit in other academic departments or programs. The deadline for the spring 2001 review of applications is Friday, March 9.
