In Memoriam

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 4, at 1 pm at Abbey Memorial Chapel for John "Jack" F. Erwin Jr., a popular professor of French at the College for thirty years (1967-1998). Erwin died February 24 at the age of sixty-one. "For thirty years, John Erwin was an immensely popular teacher and was held in high esteem by his colleagues," says Nicole Vaget, chair of the French department. "He is also remembered as one of the better known jesters at the faculty shows. A specialist in modern French poetry and on Paul Claudel, he was chair of the French department for seven years and a member of the Sweet Briar advisory board. He served the College with generosity, good humor, and infinite patience. Jack will be fondly remembered for his wit, his affability, and his incredibly warm smile." Erwin graduated from Boston College in 1960 and earned a Ph.D. in French from Columbia University in 1973. He leaves his wife, the former Barbara Terhune, three children, and five grandchildren.

Mark C. Wheeler, a trustee of the College from 1967 to 1977, died February 17 at the age of eighty-six. A former chairman of New England Merchants National Bank, president of the Museum of Science, and director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Wheeler is survived by his wife, Lois, four children, seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
