Theatre
Arts Presents Portrait of Dora
A famous case study in psychoanalysis
takes the stage March 4–7 when the Mount Holyoke College
Department of Theatre Arts presents Portrait of Dora,
written by Hélène
Cixous and directed by Deborah Philips '04.
The year is 1900. Vienna. On the couch of a somewhat cluttered
office lies a blossoming young girl. Her father has sent her
hoping that Sigmund Freud will cure her "hysteria." In
a few years Freud will publish his findings from her treatment,
and she will forever be known as his name for her, "Dora."
Hélène Cixous reclaims and recaptures Dora's voice
in Portrait of Dora. Dora's experience and the circumstances
surrounding her "hysteria" reveal themselves as she
recollects her dreams, relives her memories, and reawakens her
fantasies. Mount Holyoke College student Lindsay Stone FP plays
the sometimes forceful, sometimes fanciful, and often fragile
Dora.
Community
member Dmitri Spartos portrays the thoughtful and enigmatic Freud.
MHC students Erin Ronder '04, Ellie Schwetye '04, and Biz Wells
'06 represent apparitions of Dora's psyche—leaving the
audience questioning reality itself.
Performances are at 8 PM March 4–6 and 2 PM March 6–7
in Rooke Theatre. Admission is $3–$5 and free to MHC students
with an ID on opening night. For reservations, please call 413-538-2406.
