African, Caribbean Cultural Celebration March 10

In the spirit of cultural celebration and to raise money and awareness for causes in the East African countries of Eritrea and Ethiopia, the Mount Holyoke African and Caribbean Students Association (MHACASA) will hold its eighth annual African and Caribbean Day on Saturday, March 10. The festivities, which will be held in Chapin Auditorium, will include dinner and a cultural show featuring African and Caribbean dancing, singing, poetry, and dramatic presentations. The dinner begins at 5 pm and the cultural show begins at 7 pm. A party will follow at 10 pm at the Betty Shabazz House.

The proceeds of the evening will go toward efforts to help the 1.5 million people of Eritrea who have been displaced by war and drought and who are now threatened with mass starvation. MHACASA will also be raising money for the Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. Built in 1975, this hospital provides free treatment and care to women with obstetric fistula, a condition experienced predominantly by women in developing countries that affects their health after childbirth. In past years, MHACASA has raised nearly $13,000 for the countries of Somalia, Haiti, Rwanda, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, Liberia, Montserrat, Sierra Leone, and Kenya.
