Magazine
Launch Students in Corinne Demas’s short story writing class
are not only learning the craft of short fiction. Aspiring writers in English
professor Demas’s spring and fall 2004 English 303 classes launched their
own literary magazine, the Blackstick Review. The second volume of the magazine,
which is published online and in print, has just come out. The publication
takes its name from a literary journal published at Mount Holyoke from 1909
to1961. While Demas admits a partiality to hard copy, she is excited about
the online format: “An online publication like this gets extraordinary
circulation. Students can send it to family and friends at other colleges.” The
experience of publishing online will give students a leg up in the job market,
too, said Demas. She credits several tech-savvy students with helping pull
the magazine together, and also expressed thanks to Aime DeGrenier, instructional
technology consultant at LITS, for her help. To read the Blackstick Review

On the Move After 16 years in Safford Hall, the
offices of the Frances Perkins Program are now located, along with
admission, in the newly renovated and expanded Newhall Center on
College Street, across from the library. The Frances Perkins offices
are to the left of the main reception area. Feel free to stop in
and take a look at the beautiful new spaces.
And the Award Goes To . . . Rose Phillips ’05,
an environmental studies major, received the outstanding research
award for her independent project at the Semester in Environmental
Science (SES) program at the Marine Biological Laboratory this
past fall. Phillips’s project involved measuring the concentrations
and chemical forms of copper, lead, and zinc in the inner and outer
West Falmouth harbor sediments. “SES is a very rigorous science
program, and receiving the outstanding research award is a major
accomplishment,” said Jill Bubier, Marjorie Fisher Associate
Professor of Environmental Studies.
MHC Printmakers Eleven MHC students are part of
the Fourth Arches Biennial Student Print Exhibition at the Boston
University Gallery. The Boston Printmakers and Arches Paper are
sponsoring the event, which runs through March 27. The show includes
nearly 300 works of contemporary printmaking from 20 New England
colleges and art schools. The Boston Printmakers was founded more
than 50 years ago by a group of printmaking students and teachers
to educate the public about fine-art printmaking and to provide
wider opportunities for the exhibition of original prints. Mount
Holyoke students participating in the exhibition are Nisha Agha ’05,
Kat Cope ’05, Kristen B.Dolloff ’06, Minh Duong ’05,
Holland Gage ’06, Cindy Lepage ’05, Penni Martorell ’05,
