"The Poet and the Maulana: Debating Islamic Politics
in Interwar India" Lecture by Thomas R. Metcalf,
Department of History, University of California, Berkeley.
The "poet" of the title is Muhammad Iqbal (1873-1938),
whose anticolonial poems captivated the Urdu-speaking public
of the Indian subcontinent before independence; the "maulana" of
the title is Maulana Husain Ahmad Madani, principal of the
leading theological seminary at Deoband, 1926-1957. The poet
wrote verses mocking the maulana; the maulana replied with
