Faculty-Student Fellowship Supports International Research
Mount Holyoke’s
commitment to internationalism shows. More than one hundred international
students are new to campus this year; more than one-third of juniors
are spending a semester or year abroad; and many other students
are taking advantage of programs and exchanges sponsored or supported
by the College. Even the January Term schedule reflected a global
perspective, including courses such as Global Leadership Forum,
as well as trips to the Republic of Georgia and Senegal.
In keeping with the College’s increasing emphasis on internationalism,
President Joanne V. Creighton and Dean of Faculty Donal O’Shea
have approved the Ruth C. Lawson International Faculty-Student
Collaborative Fellowship (RLIFSCF), a new opportunity for faculty
and students to integrate a global perspective into teaching and
learning. The fellowship will cover the cost of students’
travel, housing, and out-of-pocket expenses while they work abroad
with faculty on summer research projects.
“This represents a new step in encouraging faculty to work
abroad on research and to continue the kind of mentoring relationships
with students pioneered by the late Ruth Lawson, Professor Emeritus
of International Relations,” said RLIFSCF chair Frederick
McGinness, associate professor of history and chair of complex
organizations. “For years, Ruth took students abroad, found
challenging internships for them, and monitored their work while
broadening their intellectual horizons. In this same spirit, many
Mount Holyoke faculty members today carry out activities of this
kind. The present initiative seeks to give more structured institutional
support to their efforts and to encourage other faculty to undertake
similar projects.”
How to Apply
First-years, sophomores, and juniors are invited to apply for
the RLIFSCF, whose recipients will be announced in mid-April.
Applications, which are due March 31, should be submitted to Frederick
McGinness, chair, the Ruth C. Lawson International Faculty-Student
Collaborative Fellowship, 310 Skinner Hall. The RLIFSCF has no
rigid criteria for proposed projects but urges close faculty-student
cooperation, broad international exposure, substantive engagement,
and sophisticated reflection upon the experience. Preference will
be given to students who plan to work or do research abroad directly
under an MHC faculty mentor. Selected students will be required
to submit an independent study paper on their work and to make
a presentation on their internship at a department or program
gathering. They may receive four to eight credits for their work.
