A new
exhibition, titled Architecture of Silence: Cistercian Abbeys
of France, will open at the College’s art museum on March 29.
The exhibition features 40 photographs by David Heald, chief
photographer for the Guggenheim
Museum.
A prominent architectural photographer, Heald is interested in the interplay
of architecture and the natural landscape. He made seven trips to France between
1985 and 1995 to photograph the abbeys, which have long been revered for their
exquisite proportions and ethereal, minimalist design.
Heald’s large-format black-and-white images come to Mount Holyoke’s
museum as a traveling exhibition organized by Exhibitions International of
New York. Tom Hinson, curator of photography at the Cleveland Museum of Art,
observed, “Heald’s photographs capture the essence, the emotional
impact, of these incredible spaces. In his detailed images, the marriage
of light, space, and texture is succinctly, beautifully expressed.
His serene photographs perfectly render the distinguishing quality
of Cistercian architecture
and monastic life: silence.”
The exhibition will run from March 29 through July 3. On Thursday,
April 7, at 4:30 pm the artist, son of Barbara Legg Heald ’46, will
make an informal presentation at the museum; a reception will follow
