Students and alumnae
of the Mount Holyoke Leadership and Career Mentoring Network will
host the 2003 MHC Leadership and Career Conference, "Inspiring
Vision and Success," to be held Saturday, March 29, 10 am–4
pm, in Gamble Auditorium, Willits-Hallowell Center, and Kendade
Hall. This year's event, inspired by last year's successful
business, finance, and technology conference, focuses on learning
from those who have demonstrated personal vision, leadership,
and achievement in their chosen vocations, as well as active,
transformational leadership in society.
"Inspiring Vision and Success" will feature seventeen
women and men of extraordinary accomplishment, including Kavita
N. Ramdas '85, who will deliver a speech titled "Global
Leadership" at 10 am in Gamble Auditorium. Ramdas is president
and CEO of the international organization Global Fund for Women,
which has granted $25.5 million to 2,000 women's groups
in 161 countries and is currently funding women's education
projects in Afghanistan.
Other speakers include Safia Rizvi, a leading scientist in genetic
research at GlaxoSmithKline and founder and executive director
of eLIT, a nonprofit organization that teaches computer literacy
to underprivileged women and children; Micaela D. Cordoba '97,
an independent filmmaker and director of Catching the Spirit:
Healing and Recovery in Brooklyn Communities after 9/11;
and Claire O'Connor, a managing director at JPMorgan Chase.
"It is our aim that the conference will empower students
through the success strategies and career- and leadership-focused
advice shared by the conference speakers," said Analisa
L. Balares '99, director of development and new ventures
for Milestone Capital Management and chair of the MHC Business
and Technology Alumnae Mentors, which helped organize the conference.
"We hope to inspire students to reflect on their personal
vision, and through the speeches, panels, and networking events,
be able to gain insight into the diverse pathways toward achieving
their career and leadership goals," says Balares. "Amidst
others' efforts to tear down the fabric of peace and civilization
of our global society, our team is focusing on doing something
constructive—empowering young women to become successful
leaders with the vision, insight, and good judgment to create
a future with greater peace, prosperity, and equality for all.
Despite the chaos, we must never lose sight of what we hope to
achieve."
In addition to making keynote speeches and presentations, conference
speakers will participate in a networking lunch and panel discussions
on success and leadership in science, medicine, and technology;
business and finance; and non-
profits and policy making.
Students interested in the conference
should register in advance by emailing mhcmentors2003@yahoo.com.
Registration and a breakfast take place in the Gamble Auditorium
lobby 9–10 am. Those wishing to attend the networking lunch
should sign up for it between 9 and 9:30 am. For more information,
