Spring Free from Smoking A six-session program (March 23 and 30; April 6,13, 20, and 27) will be offered Saturdays from10 am to noon, to help smokers quit the habit. The emphasis will be on learning new coping skills and withdrawal techniques and creating a support network. Nicotine replacement therapy (patches) will be available. This program, which will be offered in the MHC Health Center conference room, is being sponsored by Tapestry Health, the Granby–South Hadley Tobacco Control Program, and MHC Health Services. The fee is on a sliding scale (low cost to free), and the series is open to students, staff, faculty, and the general public. Call Carl at Tapestry at 586-2016, x169, to preregister. Please note: You can miss the first session because of spring break but you must preregister.

The Clio-Melpomene Prize Peter Viereck, Professor Emeritus of History and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, has endowed this annual prize for "a young woman who follows her private star in poetic style or historical interpretation." The $2,000 prize is awarded to assist aspiring poets and/or historians in travel or study after graduation. Applicants must be graduating seniors. There are no GPA or citizenship restrictions. Application materials are due Friday, May 3, by 5 pm in the Career Development Center. Applicants should submit a sample of work in poetry and/or history. There is no requirement that the work have been completed for a course, independent study, or major. The sample should be large enough to fully represent the applicant’s work. Also required is a short (one- to three-page) personal statement addressing the work, aspirations for continued work in the field, plans after graduation, and any other information that is relevant to the applicant’s work and future plans. Optional are one or two recommendations from faculty or other mentors who know the work well. The judging committee is made up of members of the English and history departments. Professor Viereck does not sit on the committee. The prize winner will be announced shortly before commencement. For further information, contact Katya King at x2080.

Koster Insurance Health Careers Scholarship Program The Koster Insurance Agency of Quincy, Massachusetts, is accepting applications for the Koster Insurance Health Careers Scholarship Program. All full-time undergraduates majoring in a healthcare field who have completed at least one year of study toward a two-year degree, or two years of study toward a four-year degree, are encouraged to apply. Last year, three students received awards of $2,500 to continue their studies. The application deadline is April 16. Mount Holyoke Employee Scholarship Fund The Mount Holyoke Staff Council is pleased to oversee the Employee Scholarship Fund, which was established in honor of former President David B. Truman. A minimum of $200 each year is awarded to a qualified daughter, son, or other dependent child of a Mount Holyoke College employee who will not receive any other assistance from Mount Holyoke for tuition costs for the applicant. The scholarship is to be used to offset the cost of education at an accredited school for postsecondary education. Candidates must be high school seniors. Determination factors include educational goals, high school achievement, and character. A committee of Staff Council members will evaluate applications. The deadline for the receipt of applications is May 1. Application forms are available from Staff Council cochairs Yvonne Nicholson, English Department, 201 Clapp, and Li-Ling Waller, Eliot House.

Second*Saturday 2002 Seeks Group Leaders Students wishing to lead activities for new students on Saturday, September 14, 2002, should pick up an application form (available in the music department office or from the Office of the Associate Dean of Students) and return it to Catharine Melhorn, Second*Saturday coordinator before Friday, April 5. Selection of group leaders will happen soon after that date. Ideas for new community projects are also welcome (community service or entirely recreational), as is the participation of faculty, staff, and local alumnae.
