Creating a Green Campus
T he Kill-A-Watt contest is a monthly interdorm competition designed to increase students' awareness of energy consumption and decrease energy use in residence halls. Each month, the dorm with the greatest percentage of energy reduction, in relation to that month's use last year, wins. Signs in dorms encourage students to shut off lights, stereos, and radios when leaving their rooms and take the stairs instead of the elevator (if they are able to). The contest began in the early 1990s, but lost momentum when its organizers graduated. In 1998, the Campus Conservation Coalition (CCC) reinstated the competition with great success, and dorm energy consumption went down an average of 7 percent. The 20002001 results show an increase in consumption from last year, something the CCC hopes to reverse with renewed publicity efforts in April. Contest winners help select a local nonprofit organization to receive a donation from the College. Kill-A-Watt is a collaborative effort of the CCC, the Center for Environmental Literacy, and Facilities Management. |
