York, New York The March 29 New York Review of Books features four
members of the Mount Holyoke Community. Brad Leithauser, Emily Dickinson
Lecturer in the Humanities, reviewed the book Reading Lyrics, a study
of the words of popular American songs and show tunes. A review titled
The Greatest Generation looks at new books by Joseph Ellis,
Ford Foundation Professor of History, and Catherine Allgor FP '92,
a professor at Simmons College. The new volumes are, respectively, Founding
Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation, and Parlor Politics: In Which
the Ladies of Washington Help Build a City and a Government. Daniel
Mendelson, in a cover piece titled The Triumph of the Poet,
considers the work of poet Gjertrud Schnackenberg '75. All but

Global Trailblazer The Boston Globe of Sunday, March 25, carried a report
on the Frances Perkins symposium held on campus March 8 and 9. The piece,
titled Trailblazer Frances Perkins celebrated at Mount Holyoke,
presents an overview of the points raised by a number of highly acclaimed
scholars who discussed the legacy of Perkins, former secretary of labor
and member of the MHC class of 1902.

On Fire News organizations from throughout the Pioneer Valley,
including local newpapers and television stations from as far away as
Hartford, covered the College's presentation of a hand-held thermal
imaging system to the local fire department March 21. Used by fire fighters
to see through smoke, the thermal imager will improve situation awareness,
distance judgement, navigation, and overall safety.
