Employee Scholarship Fund Mount Holyoke is pleased to offer the
Employee Scholarship Fund, which was established in honor of former
President David B. Truman. A minimum of $200 each year is awarded to
a qualified daughter, son, or other dependent child of an MHC employee
who will not receive any other assistance from MHC for tuition costs
for the applicant. Contact Barbara Bunyan at x2834 or Yvonne Nicholson
at x2146, cochairs of the Staff Council, to obtain an application. The
deadline for submitting the application is May 1.
Celebrating Retirement
The College's semiannual staff retirement program will be held
Wednesday, April 4, from 2 to 4 pm in the living room at the Willits-Hallowell
Center. Friends and colleagues of honorees Emile Chretien and J. Dorothy
Sicard are invited to share in this special occasion.
Give Us Some Space The basement space in Mary Woolley
Hall that the College's Office of Communications calls home will
undergo a facelift during April and May. The renovation will enlarge
the design area, provide badly need new storage areas, and improve working
conditions for the staff. Those who work with communications are asked
to be patient during the transition period, as staff will be working
in temporary quarters in Mary Woolley.
STUDENTS
The Clio-Melpomene Prize
At least $1,500 will be awarded to assist aspiring poets and/or historians
in travel or study after graduation. Applicants must be graduating seniors.
There are no GPA or citizenship restrictions. There is no requirement
that the work have been completed for a course, independent work or
major. Peter Viereck, Professor Emeritus of History and winner of the
Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, has endowed this annual prize for a
young woman who follows her private star in poetic style or historical
interpretation. Application materials are due Wednesday, May 2,
by 5 pm in the Career Development Center. Applicants should submit a
sample of work in poetry and/or history. The sample should be large
enough to fully represent the applicant's work. Also required is
a short (one to three-page) personal statement, addressing the work,
aspirations for continued work in the field, plans after graduation,
and any other information that is relevant to the applicant's work
and future plans. Optional are one or two recommendations from faculty
or other mentors who know the work well. The judging committee is made
up of members of the English and history departments. Professor Viereck
does not sit on the committee. The prize winner will be announced shortly
before commencement.
Become a Sexual Health Educator Teach others about
safer sex, women's health concerns, gynecological exams, and sexually
transmitted infections. Applications are available outside room 112,
Blanchard Campus Center, and room 131, Health Center, as well as online
on the Health Services Web site at www.mtholyoke.edu/offices/health.

Evelyn Finkbeiner Fellowship
The Department of German Studies invites German studies majors planning
to study in Germany in 20012002 to apply for the Evelyn Finkbeiner
Fellowship for Study Abroad. Application requirements are an up-to-date
transcript; information on other funding available for study abroad;
and a short statement in German explaining how the fellowship will foster
and support academic plans for study in Germany. The application deadline
is March 30.
