Rooke's Curtain Rises on Cabaret The famously disturbing and decadent Cabaret, a musical by Robert Masteroff set in Hitler's Germany, opens at MHC's Rooke Theatre Thursday, April 6, at 8 pm. The performance is directed by Joyce Devlin, professor of theatre arts, with musical direction by Mark Gionfriddo, instructor and Catholic music director. Sets are designed by Leandro Soto, visiting lecturer in theatre arts, and costumes are by Vanessa James, associate professor of theatre arts. Performances are Thursday through Saturday, April 6 - 9 and April 13 - 16. For reservations, call x2406. Cabaret 1945 will take place one-half hour prior to the main show's curtain in the theatre lobby under the direction of Karen Remmler, MHC associate professor of German. The performance is presented by the Department of Theatre Arts in collaboration with the German studies and music departments.

A Star is Born MHC deans Beverly Daniel Tatum and Rochelle Calhoun journeyed to New York's Central Presbyterian Church March 25 to see Kira Hudson '00 perform the lead role in Once Upon An Island, a musical produced by the New York Youth Theater. The play is being performed at the church, (593 Park Avenue at 64th Street) on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through April 8. A March 17 New York Times review noted that character Ti Moune was "beautifully played by Ms. Hudson." Hudson, a psychology major and music minor, finished her degree in December and is spending time in New York until graduation. She plans to start the doctoral program in clinical psychology at the University of Michigan next fall. Call 212-888-0696 for tickets to the play.

Broaching the Subject of a New Bridge MHC President Joanne Creighton; the presidents of Amherst, Hampshire, and Smith Colleges; David Scott, chancellor of UMass, Amherst; and Lorna Peterson, Five Colleges, Inc. coordinator, recently sent a joint letter to Senator Stanley C. Rosenberg to express their appreciation for Rosenberg's endorsement of a plan that will fund road and bridge projects statewide. Noted the group, "Several of these projects, we believe, have the potential to benefit significantly the quality of life and economic health of western Massachusetts. In particular, we welcome the prospect of a study for the construction of a second bridge spanning the Connecticut River." The letter, a plea to move forward with the second bridge study in addition to planned repairs of the Calvin Coolidge bridge, suggests that building another bridge is the best way to relieve the congestion of the Route 9 corridor between Amherst and Northampton.

Spring-Break Debate While many undergraduates were heading back from the beaches, twenty teams from colleges and universities on the East and West coasts convened at MHC for a serious dose of spring-break debating. The event has been praised as one of the best American Parliamentary Debate Association tournaments this year. Debt relief in Africa inspired a passionate grand round volley between teams from Brandeis and Stanford. The Mount Holyoke Speech and Debate Society, proud host of the event and one of only a few entirely female debate teams, wishes to express gratitude to all of the College's supporting departments and offices--with special thanks to the Alumnae Association, the president's office, and the Weissman Center for Leadership.
