English Department Writing
Prizes The English department will award the following prizes
this year. The Virginia Lee Barnes Prize will be given for the best
critical essay by a senior in English, American studies, Medieval
studies, or women's studies. The Gertrude Claytor: Academy of
American Poets award will be given for a poem or group of poems of
not more than four pages. Excellence in journalistic writing will be
acknowledged with the Minnie Ryan Dwight Prize. The
MacArthur-Leithauser Travel Award will be given for creative writing,
and the Sydney Robertson McLean Prize will be awarded for short story
writing. The Anne Singer '69 Memorial Award will be given for poems,
stories, plays, or any other form of creative writing. The Ada L.F.
Snell Poetry Prize will be given for a poem or group of poems of not
more than fifty lines. For details on submitting entries and to pick
up an application form, please stop by the English department office,
201 Clapp. The deadline for all entries is Monday, April 24, at 4 pm.

Admission is primarily responsible for Explore, the program's success
depends on the assistance of students, faculty, and staff. Many of
these visitors will be on campus for the first time for Explore.
