[New & Notable]

Making a Difference Although Nancy Larson, assistant to the dean of the college, is kept quite busy with her job at MHC, she has a second career as an advocate for the families of homicide victims. Following the 1991 murder of her son, Daniel, Larson and her family established the Daniel A. Larson Foundation to provide emotional support and financial assistance to the survivors of homicide victims. Last fall, the foundation was selected to be the recipient of funds raised at the Boston Bruins Wives' annual charity carnival held January 9. At a pregame ceremony in Boston on March 25, Larson received a check on behalf of the foundation in the amount of $185,000. Many staff and faculty at Mount Holyoke have been extremely supportive of the foundation and work as volunteers.

Voice of the Liberal Arts Triumphs Katherine Kaiser '02 was selected to sing in the semifinals of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition in Boston in February. With heavy competition from students at conservatories and schools of music (few competitors came from liberal arts institutions), this was a considerable accomplishment. Kaiser studies voice with Cheryl Cobb, MHC music instructor, and was accompanied by Mark Gionfriddo, MHC music instructor and Catholic music director.

Glee Club Takes Montreal by Storm Sixty-eight members of the Mount Holyoke Glee Club and faculty members Cathy Melhorn, Hammond-Douglass Professor of Music and director of the group; Larry Schipull, associate professor of music; and John Lemly, professor of English, just returned from a four-day trip to Montreal. Participants contributed funds for the trip, raised money by having a car wash, and received support from the College's Choral Music Fund. The group sang for more than three hundred middle-school children at the performing- arts magnet school, FACE. Coached ahead of the trip by former Glee Club member Alix Boucher '01, seven MHC students announced the various selections in French and in English. The Glee Club also sang Mass at St. Patrick's Basilica and offered an informal "Ave Maria" during a tour of Notre Dame in Vieux, Montreal, much to the delight of the other tourists. The group met up with four alumnae living in Montreal and Amanda DeMeola '01, who is on exchange at McGill University.
